We provide volunteer stewards for out grounds such as Uxbridge, Richmond and Southgate. See these frequently asked questions for anything you want to know and please consider helping Middlesex, and having an enjoyable time at the same time.

What does a Steward have to do?

They act as Middlesex CCC Marshals in areas where spectator movements may need to be regulated when play is in progress.

 What areas for example?

By the pavilion or the players enclosure which is out of bounds to spectators.  Most Stewards spend some time beside the sightscreens to ensure spectators do not walk in front or behind the screen when the bowling is from that end.

 Why is sightscreen duty necessary?

When a Bowler is running in to bowl movement in the background distracts the Batsmen and affects their concentration.  Even at Lord’s it is not unusual for a Batsman to draw away when the Bowler is running in because of spectator movement in the seats near the screen.

 Do spectators understand all this?

The majority do but sometimes need to be reminded.  However children may not be familiar with the etiquette of the game.

Will I be in the same place all day?

Depending on how many volunteers and areas there are to be covered, places may be changed and stewards relieved throughout a day.

Would I be on my feet all the time?

Not necessarily.   You are only on ‘duty’ when the bowling is from your end so during every other over you can sit, relax and watch the cricket.

Would I be on my own?

No. The stewarding is generally done in pairs.  Also most spectators are members and you are likely to see and speak to people you know.  In addition players from the batting side walk around the ground which sometimes attracts attention.

How will spectators know I am an official steward?

You will be provided with coat marked ‘Steward’ which you will hand-in at the end of play.

What happens if there are no Volunteers?

In that event Middlesex CCC would be obliged to employ paid stewards from an Events company.

How do I volunteer?

Simply contact Kate Woodruff by ‘phone (020 8874 4159) or email (seaxe@hotmail.co.uk) or write to her at 211 Putney Bridge Rd  London SW15 2NY.

By the way:  Seaxe stewards receive free parking for the matches they volunteer for: you will be given a special car parking pass to display as you enter the ground.
